Use:
\nThis medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
\nIt is usually prescribed alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise and may be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin.<\/p>\n
How it works:
\nThe active ingredient, vildagliptin, works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4 (dipeptidyl peptidase-4).
\nThis increases the levels of incretin hormones in the body, which in turn stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin and decrease glucagon secretion after meals.
\nAs a result, it helps maintain steady blood glucose levels throughout the day without causing significant weight gain or hypoglycemia when used alone.<\/p>\n
Dosage and administration:
\nThe usual adult dose is 50 mg once or twice daily, depending on whether it is used alone or in combination with other diabetes medicines.<\/p>\n
When used alone or with metformin or a thiazolidinedione, the usual dose is 50 mg twice daily (morning and evening).<\/p>\n
When used with a sulfonylurea, the recommended dose is 50 mg once daily in the morning.
\nSwallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food.

Side effects:
\nGalvus is generally well tolerated.
