Medication name: Ezilax Lactulose Syrup 300 ml
Drug class: Osmotic laxative
Use:
This medication is used to treat constipation and to soften stools for easier and more comfortable bowel movements.
It is also used under medical supervision in patients with liver disease to help reduce high blood ammonia levels (hepatic encephalopathy).
How it works:
The active ingredient, lactulose, is a synthetic sugar that is not absorbed in the intestine.
When it reaches the colon, it is broken down by gut bacteria into mild organic acids.
These acids draw water into the bowel, softening the stool and stimulating gentle peristaltic movement, which helps restore regular bowel function.
In liver disease, lactulose helps lower the absorption of ammonia by trapping it in the colon and promoting its removal from the body.
Dosage and administration:
For adults with constipation, the usual starting dose is 15–45 ml once daily, which may be adjusted to 15–30 ml daily for maintenance.
For children, the dose is usually 5–10 ml daily, depending on age and medical advice.
For hepatic encephalopathy, the dose may be higher, as prescribed by a doctor.
Ezilax can be taken once daily or divided into two doses.
It may be taken directly or mixed with water, juice, or milk.
Adequate fluid intake during treatment is recommended.
Side effects:
Ezilax is generally safe and well tolerated.
Mild side effects may include bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, or nausea, especially at the beginning of treatment.
Excessive doses may cause diarrhea or electrolyte imbalance.
If severe or persistent symptoms occur, consult a doctor.
Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to lactulose or if you have intestinal obstruction, galactose intolerance, or low galactose diet restrictions.
Consult a doctor before use if you are diabetic, as the syrup contains small amounts of sugar.
Long-term use should be monitored by a healthcare professional to avoid electrolyte imbalance.
Safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding under medical supervision.
Storage:
Store below 25 °C in a dry place, away from heat and direct sunlight.
Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
Do not use after the expiry date printed on the label.
