Medication name: Jardiance Empagliflozin 25 mg Tablets × 30
Drug class: Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor / Oral antidiabetic agent
Use:
This medication is used to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It is also prescribed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with both type 2 diabetes and established heart disease, and to protect kidney function in diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease.
How it works:
The active ingredient, empagliflozin, works by inhibiting the SGLT2 (sodium-glucose co-transporter 2) proteins in the kidneys.
These proteins normally reabsorb glucose back into the bloodstream.
By blocking them, empagliflozin allows excess glucose to be excreted through the urine, thereby lowering blood sugar levels naturally and independently of insulin.
This process also helps reduce blood pressure and promote modest weight loss.
Dosage and administration:
The usual adult dose is one tablet (25 mg) once daily, taken in the morning, with or without food.
If you are starting treatment, your doctor may begin with a 10 mg dose, then increase to 25 mg as needed.
Swallow the tablet whole with water — do not crush or chew.
Take it at the same time each day to maintain consistent effect.
Stay well hydrated, as the medicine increases urine output.
Side effects:
Jardiance is generally well tolerated.
Common mild side effects include increased urination, thirst, mild dehydration, or genital yeast infections.
Occasionally, urinary tract infections or dizziness (due to fluid loss) may occur.
Rare but serious side effects include ketoacidosis (nausea, vomiting, fatigue, or rapid breathing) — seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms appear.
Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to empagliflozin or any of the tablet’s ingredients.
Avoid use in patients with severe kidney disease, dehydration, or low blood pressure.
Consult your doctor before use if you have urinary infections, liver problems, or are taking diuretics.
This medication is not suitable for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only under medical supervision.
Storage:
Store below 25 °C in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
Keep tablets in their original packaging until use.
Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiry date printed on the box.
