Medication name: Meligliptin Sitagliptin 50 mg Tablets × 30
Drug class: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor / Oral antidiabetic agent
Use:
This medication is used to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It helps improve the body’s natural ability to regulate blood glucose, particularly after meals, and is prescribed when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
Meligliptin may be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic drugs such as metformin, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin.
How it works:
The active ingredient, sitagliptin, inhibits the enzyme DPP-4 (dipeptidyl peptidase-4), which breaks down incretin hormones in the body.
By blocking this enzyme, sitagliptin increases incretin levels, enhancing insulin secretion from the pancreas and reducing glucagon production from the liver.
This mechanism helps stabilize blood sugar levels throughout the day without causing weight gain or significant hypoglycemia.
Dosage and administration:
The usual adult dose is one tablet (50 mg) once daily, taken with or without food.
In patients with kidney impairment, the dose may be adjusted by the doctor depending on kidney function.
Swallow the tablet whole with water — do not crush or chew.
Take it at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood sugar control.
Side effects:
Meligliptin is generally well tolerated.
Mild side effects may include headache, sore throat, stuffy nose, or mild gastrointestinal discomfort.
Rarely, it may cause pancreatitis, joint pain, or allergic skin reactions such as rash or swelling.
Seek medical help if you experience severe abdominal pain, persistent nausea, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to sitagliptin or any of the tablet’s ingredients.
Consult your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, heart problems, or a history of pancreatitis.
This medicine is not intended for patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Avoid excessive alcohol intake and continue regular monitoring of blood sugar levels.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only under medical supervision.
Storage:
Store below 25 °C, in a dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.
Keep tablets in their original packaging until use.
Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiry date printed on the box.
