Medication name: Formit XR Metformin 500 mg Extended-Release Tablets × 60
Drug class: Biguanide (oral antidiabetic agent)
Use:
This medication is used to control high blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It helps the body respond better to insulin, lowers glucose production in the liver, and improves the uptake and use of glucose by muscle cells.
Formit XR may be prescribed alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications to prevent complications such as nerve damage, kidney problems, and cardiovascular disease.
How it works:
The active ingredient, metformin hydrochloride, works by decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver and reducing glucose absorption from the intestines.
It also increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin, helping cells use glucose more effectively.
The extended-release (XR) formulation releases the medicine gradually over time, maintaining steady blood glucose levels while reducing stomach-related side effects.
Dosage and administration:
The usual starting dose is one tablet (500 mg) once daily, preferably taken with the evening meal to reduce stomach upset.
Depending on your blood sugar response, your doctor may increase the dose gradually up to 2000 mg daily.
Swallow the tablet whole with water — do not crush, chew, or split it.
Take it consistently at the same time each day for optimal results.
Side effects:
Formit XR is generally well tolerated.
Common side effects include mild nausea, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, or loss of appetite, especially at the beginning of treatment.
These usually subside as your body adjusts.
Rarely, it may cause lactic acidosis, a serious but uncommon condition.
Seek immediate medical help if you experience muscle pain, extreme tiredness, difficulty breathing, or unusual weakness.
Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to metformin or if you have severe kidney or liver disease, heart failure, dehydration, or metabolic acidosis.
Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
Consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or scheduled for surgery or imaging with contrast dye.
Regular monitoring of kidney function and blood glucose levels is recommended during treatment.
Storage:
Store below 25 °C in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.
Keep tablets in their original packaging until use.
Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiry date printed on the box.
