Medication name: Vivaro Insulin Degludec 100 units/mL Pre-Filled Pens 3 mL × 5
Drug class: Long-acting insulin analogue (antidiabetic agent)
Use:
This medication is used to control high blood glucose levels in adults and children with diabetes mellitus, including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
It provides steady, long-term blood sugar control and helps prevent complications such as nerve damage, kidney disease, and vision problems.
How it works:
The active ingredient, insulin degludec, is a long-acting insulin analogue that mimics the body’s natural basal insulin.
After injection under the skin, it forms soluble multi-hexamers that are slowly absorbed into the bloodstream, providing a steady insulin release for up to 42 hours.
This helps maintain consistent glucose levels throughout the day and night, reducing the risk of hypoglycemia compared to shorter-acting insulins.
Dosage and administration:
The dose is individualized based on blood glucose monitoring and your doctor’s instructions.
Vivaro is usually injected once daily, at the same time each day.
Inject subcutaneously into the thigh, upper arm, or abdomen, rotating injection sites to avoid skin irritation or thickening.
Do not inject into a vein or muscle.
Check insulin visually before use — it should be clear and colorless.
Always use a new needle for each injection, and never share pens with others, even if the needle is changed.
Side effects:
Common side effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), redness, or mild irritation at the injection site.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include sweating, dizziness, trembling, hunger, or confusion.
Less common side effects include weight gain or swelling due to fluid retention.
Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe hypoglycemia or allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to insulin degludec or any of the pen’s ingredients.
Monitor your blood glucose regularly and adjust your dose only under medical supervision.
Consult your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart problems.
Avoid alcohol, as it may affect blood sugar control.
Safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Storage:
Store unused pens in the refrigerator (2–8 °C).
Do not freeze.
Once in use, keep the pen at room temperature (below 30 °C) for up to 8 weeks and protect from direct heat and sunlight.
Keep out of reach of children and always discard expired pens properly.
