Medication name: Amaryl Glimepiride 2 mg Tablets × 30
Drug class: Sulfonylurea (oral antidiabetic agent)
Use:
This medication is used to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It is prescribed when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone do not provide adequate glucose control.
Amaryl may be used alone or in combination with other oral antidiabetic medications or insulin to achieve stable glycemic management.
How it works:
The active ingredient, glimepiride, belongs to the sulfonylurea class of drugs.
It works by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin and by improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin in peripheral tissues such as muscles and fat.
This dual action helps lower blood glucose levels and maintain better day-long glycemic control.
Dosage and administration:
The usual starting dose is 1 mg or 2 mg once daily, taken with or immediately before breakfast or the first main meal of the day.
Depending on blood sugar response, your doctor may gradually increase the dose — typically up to 4–6 mg daily if needed.
Swallow the tablet whole with water — do not crush or chew.
Always take the medication regularly and avoid skipping meals to prevent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
Side effects:
Amaryl is generally well tolerated.
The most common side effect is hypoglycemia, which may cause sweating, trembling, dizziness, hunger, or confusion.
Other mild side effects include headache, nausea, or fatigue.
Rarely, allergic skin reactions, liver enzyme changes, or visual disturbances may occur.
Seek medical attention immediately if severe hypoglycemia or allergic reactions develop.
Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to glimepiride, other sulfonylureas, or sulfa drugs.
Avoid alcohol, as it may increase the risk of low blood sugar.
Consult your doctor if you have liver or kidney impairment, adrenal or pituitary disorders, or are under significant physical stress such as infection or surgery.
Not suitable for patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only under medical supervision.
Storage:
Store below 25 °C, in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight.
Keep tablets in their original packaging until use.
Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiry date printed on the box.
