Medication name: Daonil Glibenclamide 5 mg Tablets × 30
Drug class: Sulfonylurea (oral antidiabetic agent)
Use:
This medication is used to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It is prescribed when proper diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone are not enough to maintain stable glucose levels.
Daonil may be used alone or in combination with other oral antidiabetic medications or insulin under medical supervision.
How it works:
The active ingredient, glibenclamide (also known as glyburide), is a sulfonylurea that stimulates the pancreas to release insulin.
It binds to specific receptors on pancreatic beta cells, enhancing natural insulin secretion and helping lower blood sugar levels.
It also improves the body’s response to insulin, promoting better glucose utilization by tissues.
Dosage and administration:
The usual starting dose is 2.5–5 mg once daily, taken with breakfast or the first main meal of the day.
Your doctor may gradually adjust the dose according to your blood sugar response, up to a maximum of 15 mg daily (divided into smaller doses if needed).
Swallow the tablet whole with water — do not crush or chew.
Always take the medication consistently and avoid skipping meals to prevent hypoglycemia.
Side effects:
Daonil is generally effective and well tolerated when used as directed.
The most common side effect is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which may cause sweating, trembling, dizziness, hunger, or confusion.
Other mild side effects include nausea, headache, or fatigue.
Rarely, allergic skin reactions, visual disturbances, or liver enzyme changes may occur.
Seek medical attention if you experience severe hypoglycemia or unusual symptoms.
Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to glibenclamide, other sulfonylureas, or sulfa drugs.
Avoid alcohol while taking this medication, as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar.
Consult your doctor if you have liver, kidney, adrenal, or thyroid disorders.
This medication is not suitable for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding only under medical advice.
Storage:
Store below 25 °C in a cool, dry place, away from heat and direct sunlight.
Keep tablets in their original packaging until use.
Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiry date printed on the box.
