Medication name: Amaryl Glimepiride 1 mg Tablets × 30
Drug class: Sulfonylurea (oral antidiabetic agent)
Use:
This medication is used to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It helps control glucose levels when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone are not sufficient.
Amaryl may be prescribed alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications such as metformin or insulin for improved glycemic control.
How it works:
The active ingredient, glimepiride, belongs to the sulfonylurea class of drugs.
It works by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin and increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin.
It also helps cells absorb and use glucose more effectively, while reducing glucose production by the liver.
This dual action results in steady blood sugar reduction throughout the day.
Dosage and administration:
The usual starting dose is 1 mg once daily, taken with or immediately before breakfast or the first main meal of the day.
Depending on your blood sugar response, your doctor may gradually increase the dose, typically up to 4 mg daily, and sometimes higher if necessary.
Swallow the tablet whole with water — do not crush or chew it.
Avoid skipping meals after taking the medication to prevent low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Side effects:
Amaryl is generally well tolerated when taken as directed.
The most common side effect is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which may cause sweating, shakiness, dizziness, or confusion.
Other mild effects include headache, nausea, or fatigue.
Rarely, allergic skin reactions, liver enzyme changes, or visual disturbances may occur.
Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe hypoglycemia or allergic symptoms.
Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to glimepiride, other sulfonylureas, or sulfa drugs.
Avoid alcohol, as it may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Consult your doctor before use if you have liver or kidney disease, adrenal or pituitary disorders, or are under severe stress such as infection or surgery.
Not suitable for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding only under medical supervision.
Storage:
Store below 25 °C in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight.
Keep tablets in their original packaging until use.
Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiry date printed on the box.
