Emla 5% 30 g Cream

Medication name: Emla 5% Cream contains Lidocaine (2.5%) and Prilocaine (2.5%), two local anesthetics that provide temporary numbness of the skin.

Each tube contains 30 grams of cream for external use.

Drug class: Topical local anesthetic

Use: Emla Cream is used to numb the skin before minor medical procedures, such as injections, blood tests, laser treatments, or minor skin surgery.

It is also used to reduce pain during tattooing, hair removal, and cosmetic procedures.

How it works: The combination of Lidocaine and Prilocaine blocks nerve signals (pain impulses) in the skin, temporarily preventing the sensation of pain in the treated area.

The numbing effect usually begins within 30–60 minutes of application.

Dosage and administration:

• Apply a thick layer of Emla Cream to the area to be treated.

• Cover the area with an occlusive dressing (plastic film) for at least 60 minutes before the procedure.

• For smaller procedures (like needle insertion), 30–60 minutes is sufficient; for deeper procedures, apply for up to 2 hours.

• Remove the dressing, wipe off the cream, and proceed with the procedure.

• Do not apply to open wounds, eyes, or mucous membranes.

Side effects: Common side effects include paleness or redness, mild swelling, or temporary numbness at the application site.

Rarely, allergic reactions such as rash or itching may occur.

Precautions:

• For external use only.

• Avoid use on broken or irritated skin unless advised by a healthcare provider.

• Use with caution in infants under 1 year and patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency or methemoglobinemia.

• Consult your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
