Use:
Meligamet is used to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is prescribed when diet and exercise alone are not enough to achieve adequate glucose control.

How it works:
This medication combines two active ingredients Metformin and Sitagliptin. Metformin works by reducing glucose production in the liver and improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin, helping it use glucose more effectively. Sitagliptin enhances the levels of incretin hormones, which stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin and reduce glucose release by the liver, especially after meals. Together, they help maintain balanced blood sugar throughout the day.

Dosage and administration:
Usually, one tablet is taken once or twice daily with meals, as directed by a physician. The exact dosage depends on individual blood sugar response and tolerance. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water.

Side effects:
Common side effects may include nausea, mild stomach discomfort, diarrhea, or headache. Rarely, serious side effects such as lactic acidosis (a buildup of lactic acid in the blood) may occur, especially if kidney function is impaired.

Precautions:
Inform your doctor if you have any kidney, liver, or heart conditions before starting this medication. Avoid excessive alcohol intake. It is not recommended for use in type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Regular monitoring of blood sugar and kidney function is advised.
