Use:
This medication is used to control high blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It helps the body respond more effectively to insulin and lowers both fasting and post-meal blood glucose.
Metfor is often prescribed when diet and exercise alone are not enough to control blood sugar and may be used alone or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin.

How it works:
The active ingredient, metformin hydrochloride, works by reducing glucose production in the liver, slowing the absorption of glucose from the intestines, and increasing the sensitivity of body tissues to insulin.
It promotes better glucose utilization without causing excessive insulin release, which helps prevent weight gain and minimizes the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Dosage and administration:
The usual starting dose is one tablet (850 mg) once or twice daily, taken with meals to reduce stomach discomfort.
Your doctor may gradually adjust the dose based on your blood sugar response, up to a maximum of 3000 mg daily divided into smaller doses.
Swallow the tablet whole with water — do not crush or chew.
Take the medication regularly at the same time each day for consistent blood sugar control.

Side effects:
Metfor is generally well tolerated.
Common mild side effects include nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, or loss of appetite — these typically improve after the first few days of treatment.
Rarely, lactic acidosis, a serious but uncommon condition, may occur.

Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to metformin or if you have severe kidney or liver disease, dehydration, or heart failure.
