Tobramycin 0.3%/ Dexamethasone 0.1% Eye Ointment
What Tobramycin/ Dexamethasone is used for:
- This product is used for the treatment of inflammatory eye problems that are responsive to corticosteroids therapy and that coincide with superficial bacterial eye infections or where the risk of developing superficial bacterial eye infections is high.
Do not use Tobramycin/ Dexamethasone:
- If you are allergic to Tobramycin, Dexamethasone or any of the ingredients in this medicine.
- Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.
- If you have or think that you have an eye infection that is not responsive to tobramycin (e.g. viral infections caused by varicella, vaccinia or herpes simplex viruses, fungal infections and mycobacterial infections).
- Use of corticosteroids on infected eyes that do not respond to this type of antibiotic may worsen the infection.
Possible side effects:
- Possible side effects include allergic reactions, hypersensitivity and localized eye toxicity (such as eye discomfort, lid itching and swelling, and eye redness).
- Other side effects that may occur due to dexamethasone component of this product include increased eye pressure with possible development of glaucoma (abnormally high eye pressure that may cause eye nerve damage and vision problems), posterior subcapsular cataract formation (an eye problem that can cause poor reading vision, seeing halos around lights at night and decreased vision in bright light), delayed wound healing and secondary fungal infections.
Other medicines and Tobramycin/ Dexamethasone:
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medications including prescription medicines, over the counter medicines (non-prescription medicines), vitamins, supplements and eye drops.
- If you are using more than one eye drop solution, make sure to administer each at least five minutes apart to avoid precipitation of the eye drop.
- If you are using an eye ointment, make sure that you apply it last.
How to apply Tobramycin/ Dexamethasone:
- Apply a small amount (1 – 1.5 cm) of the ointment in your conjunctival sac up to three to four times daily.
- Not more than 8 g should be initially prescribed.
How To Use:
- Use this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Ask your doctor if you are not sure.
- Make sure that the cap and the tube is not broken before you use the ointment.
- Wash your hands and open the tube by unscrewing the cap.
- Hold the ointment tube between your index finger and thumb, as close as possible to your eyelid.
- Tilt your head slightly forward and pull the lower eyelid away from your eye to form a pouch between the eyelid and the eye.
- Squeeze carefully a strip of the ointment (length of about 1-1.5 cm), the eye ointment strip will fall just into place.
- Afterwards, look slightly downwards and then make sure to close gently your eyelid for 1 to 2 minutes and then rotate your eyeball in all directions, to enhance the spread of the medicine on the entire eye surface.
- Space your eye drops by at least 5 minutes.
- Use at the same time every day.
- Do not stop using your medication without consulting your doctor.
- Avoid contact of the eye ointment tip with your eye or other surfaces to prevent bacterial contamination which may lead to eye infection and serious eye damage.
- Contact your doctor if you suspect that your eye ointment is contaminated.
How to store Tobramycin/ Dexamethasone:
- Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
- Store the medicine at 2°C to 25°C.
- Do not use beyond the expiry date mentioned on the tube.
- After opening, the medicine may be used until the expiry date on the tube.
- Keep away from light.
- Do not share your medicine with others.
- Do not dispose in the wastewater or household waste.
- Ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose medicines that you no longer use.
