Medication name: Esomep Esomeprazole 20 mg 28 Tablets
Drug class: Proton pump inhibitor (PPI)
Use:
This medication is used to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach and duodenal ulcers, and gastritis.
It helps relieve heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion, and promotes healing of the stomach and esophageal lining.
How it works:
The active ingredient, esomeprazole, works by blocking the enzyme in the stomach wall (the proton pump) that produces gastric acid.
By inhibiting this enzyme, it significantly reduces acid secretion, providing long-lasting relief and allowing the lining of the stomach and esophagus to heal.
Dosage and administration:
The usual adult dose is one tablet (20 mg) once daily, preferably before a meal.
Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew it.
Treatment duration depends on the condition — typically 2 to 4 weeks for heartburn and up to 8 weeks for ulcers or more severe reflux.
Always follow your doctor’s instructions and do not exceed the recommended dose.
Side effects:
Esomep is generally well tolerated.
Common side effects may include headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, or nausea.
Rare but serious side effects include allergic reactions, persistent diarrhea, or symptoms of low magnesium such as muscle cramps or irregular heartbeat.
Seek immediate medical help if severe or persistent symptoms occur.
Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to esomeprazole, omeprazole, or other proton pump inhibitors.
Consult your doctor before using if you have severe liver disease, osteoporosis, or low magnesium levels.
Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures or vitamin B12 deficiency.
Avoid taking Esomep with certain medications like clopidogrel unless advised by your doctor.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only under medical supervision.
Storage:
Store below 25 °C, in a dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight.
Keep tablets in their original packaging until use.
Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
