Drug class: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor / Oral antidiabetic agent

Use:
This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It is usually prescribed alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise and may be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin.

How it works:
The active ingredient, vildagliptin, works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4 (dipeptidyl peptidase-4).
This increases the levels of incretin hormones in the body, which in turn stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin and decrease glucagon secretion after meals.
As a result, it helps maintain steady blood glucose levels throughout the day without causing significant weight gain or hypoglycemia when used alone.

Dosage and administration:
The usual adult dose is 50 mg once or twice daily, depending on whether it is used alone or in combination with other diabetes medicines.

When used alone or with metformin or a thiazolidinedione, the usual dose is 50 mg twice daily (morning and evening).

When used with a sulfonylurea, the recommended dose is 50 mg once daily in the morning.
Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food.
Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding dose adjustments and duration of therapy.

Side effects:
Galvus is generally well tolerated.
Possible mild side effects include headache, dizziness, constipation, or mild gastrointestinal discomfort.
Rarely, it may cause liver enzyme elevation, swelling in the hands or feet, or joint pain.
Stop taking the medication and seek medical attention if you experience persistent abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), or severe fatigue.

Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to vildagliptin or any of the ingredients.
Consult your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney problems, or a history of pancreatitis.
Regular monitoring of liver function is recommended during long-term treatment.
Not recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if prescribed by a doctor.

Storage:
Store below 25 °C in a dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
Keep tablets in their original packaging until use.
Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiry date printed on the box.
