Use:
This medication is used to control high blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It helps the body respond better to insulin and is often prescribed when diet and exercise alone are not enough to manage blood glucose.
Metfor may be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic agents such as sulfonylureas, DPP-4 inhibitors, SGLT2 inhibitors, or insulin.

How it works:
The active ingredient, metformin hydrochloride, works by reducing glucose production in the liver, decreasing sugar absorption in the intestines, and improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin.
It helps cells use glucose more effectively for energy, thereby lowering both fasting and post-meal blood sugar levels.
Metformin does not increase insulin secretion, so it carries a low risk of causing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Dosage and administration:
The usual starting dose is one tablet (500 mg) once or twice daily, taken with meals to reduce stomach discomfort.
Your doctor may gradually increase the dose depending on your blood sugar response, up to a maximum of 2000 mg per day, divided into two or three doses.
Swallow the tablet whole with water — do not crush or chew.
Continue taking Metfor regularly to maintain stable glucose control.

Side effects:
Metfor is generally well tolerated.
Common mild side effects include nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, or loss of appetite, especially at the start of treatment.
These usually improve as your body adjusts.
Rarely, lactic acidosis, a serious but uncommon condition, may occur — symptoms include extreme fatigue, muscle pain, and shortness of breath.
Seek medical help immediately if these appear.

Precautions:
Do not use if allergic to metformin or if you have severe kidney or liver problems, dehydration, or heart failure.
Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
Consult your doctor before using Metfor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or scheduled for surgery or imaging involving contrast dye.
Regular monitoring of kidney function and blood sugar levels is recommended during long-term use.
